The Alaska Conference of Catholic Bishops is the voice of the Roman Catholic in Alaska on public issues related to the moral and social teaching of the Church. Members include Most Reverend Roger L. Schwietz, O.M.I., Archbishop of Anchorage; Most Reverend Francis T. Hurley, Archbishop Emeritus; and Most Reverend Donald Kettler, Bishop of Fairbanks.  

The Alaska Conference of Catholic Bishops initiates seeking help from parishioners for being a positive influence on public policy relating to: Protection of life, Support of families, Access to economic opportunity, Personal education and good role models for our children and Aid to the poor and vulnerable.

When registered participants receive the Action Alert information via email or posted mail or a phone call, they will participate at their individual level of interest:

  1. Be informed,
  2. Take specific action by calling or writing Legislator(s),
  3. Pass on information to parish community encouraging a specific action, and
  4. Lobby for the issue(s) or legislation as part of a group.

How the Legislative Network Works

The Alaska Conference of Catholic Bishops will:

  • plan and adopt legislative goals and priorities during their Fall Meeting.
  • with their staff and Lobbyist, they communicate with policy makers and keep track of legislative bills of interest and keep the bishops informed and advised of political implications.
  • send an Action Alert email message to the Diocesan Legislative Network Coordinator.
  • after sending the Action Alert to Diocesan Coordinator, who then forwards the Action Alert email message to all registered participants including a contact person in any parish or mission who will then contact the registered participant by phone or posted mail.
